Summer Enrichment and Training Opportunities

Summer offers opportunities for further development of career option awareness as well as financial assistance for high school MESA students. Below is a listing of 2007 Summer Enrichment and Training Opportunities.

SUMMET
June 10-30, 2007

Colorado School of Mines' Summer Minority Engineering Training (SUMMET) Program is a science and engineering program for talented high school sophomore and junior minority students who are strong in science and math. Combining class work, hands-on projects, industry tours, sporting activities and social events, SUMMET is an excellent stepping stone to the lifestyle and rigors of college. Students from across the nation stay in Colorado School of Mines residence halls and receive instruction in calculus, chemistry, geology, computer science and basic to advanced engineering concepts. Making of a Scientist
June 17 - July 1, 2007

Making of a Scientist is a college credit course offered at the University of Denver for high school students interested in learning about the relationship between mathematics, computer science, and chemistry. Computers will continue to revolutionize science as scientists expand their understanding of computers and their applications in the scientific world. The goal of this course is to show students the close and important relationships that exist between the disciplines of mathematics, computer science, and chemistry. Students will attend classes taught by DU science and math faculty and participate in small group projects (called academies) with DU science faculty.

PREP
July 9-13, 2007

Colorado School of Mines' Preparation for Engineering Program (PREP) is a science and engineering program for talented 8th and 9th grade minority students who are strong in science and math. Combining class work, hands-on projects, industry tours, and social events, PREP is an excellent stepping stone to the lifestyle and rigors of college. Participating students from the Denver Metro area will receive instruction in algebra, chemistry, geology, computer science and basic engineering concepts. UCDHSC Pre-Collegiate Development Program

The Pre-Collegiate Development Program (PCDP) at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center Downtown Denver Campus is an academic enrichment and support program designed to motivate potential first-generation (neither of whose natural or adoptive parent(s) received a baccalaureate degree), and/or underrepresented students in higher education complete a college preparatory curriculum, and pursue a college education.

The Program will offer students in grades 9 through 12, the opportunity to engage in a wide range of Pre-Collegiate activities throughout the academic year. The academic year component will offer students monthly Saturday Academies consisting of study skills and career orientation workshops, class selection, tutoring and a variety of cultural enrichment experiences. CU Boulder Success Institute
July 9-20, 2007

Success Institute - a hands-on engineering experience in a friendly environment. Try it - explore engineering through the creation of imaginative and fun projects. The Institute takes the mystery out of engineering as you explore your interest in creating things to help others.

Students participate in a multi-day, hands-on "design and create" workshops and have the opportunity to return in future summers. The commuter workshop for students in entering the 9th and 10th grades is held in Denver. The week-long, on campus resident workshops for students entering the 11th and 12th grades is held on the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. Click here for more information >>
