Mentor Program

Colorado MESA is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization under the Colorado Minority Engineering Association (CMEA). Our Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program is designed to encourage under-represented and female students to prepare themselves for a college education and to major in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM).  Our University mentoring program provides an opportunity for MESA students and advisors to interact with university students. 

As a mentor, you will serve as a role model, provide leadership, show how math, science and  engineering relate to their future goals and help encourage and motivate students to pursue a university/college degree.

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled university/college student majoring in mathematics, engineering, science, health careers or closely related field (i.e. physics, business, teacher education, etc)
  • Strong interpersonal skills, motivated, enthusiastic and willing to learn and explore the fields of science, engineering, mathematics, and technology (STEM) with students
  • Experience working with under-represented youth in grades K-12 or desire to learn
  • Available to attend mentor training in August prior to the commencement of the academic year
  • Available to commit to mentoring at least once a week for 2 to 4 hours
  • Successfully pass a background check
  • Be able to travel to assigned school (own a vehicle)

Responsibilities:

  • Attend weekly MESA meetings at assigned school and work with the MESA advisor to implement MESA curriculum on weekly basis
  • Meet individually with the MESA advisor to plan and coordinate hands-on activities
  • Maintain accurate timesheets and mentor logs about services provided
  • Record observations and success stories to Center Director
  • Participate in training prior to visiting a school and throughout the year as needed
  • Meet with Center Director at mid-year, end of year and as needed
  • Mentor students on the university experience, including referring students to the appropriate agencies such as financial aid, admissions and multicultural engineering programs. 

Compensation:

$12 per hour
